Icing is called when a player shoots the puck from behind the center line all the way across the opponent’s goal line without anyone touching it, and the referee blows the whistle the moment it crosses the line. When a player goes to the penalty box, their team plays short‑handed (usually 2‑5 minutes) and the other team gets a power play – a temporary man‑advantage that can change the momentum, so teams focus on tighter defense and quick shots during that stretch.
