I'm trying to get a deeper understanding of how fleet composition influences overall growth and battle outcomes in OGame. Specifically, I'm curious about the balance between cargo ships, combat ships, and support units, and how different ratios affect resource gathering and defense efficiency. Also, how do alliance tactics and timing play into optimal fleet setups? I'd love to hear your experiences, any rule-of-thumb formulas, or resources that explain the underlying mechanics. What approaches have you found most effective for scaling up without overcommitting resources?

Do you notice a big shift in the optimal cargo‑to‑combat ratio when you factor in alliance warp timing, or does the raw speed of the cargo ships dominate the decision? Also, is there a sweet spot for support units that boosts defense without draining too many resources?

When I first started shifting from pure raiding to a more balanced growth strategy, I set my cargo‑to‑combat ratio at roughly 3 cargo ships for every 1 combat ship. The idea was simple: every Battlecruiser or Destroyer I sent out needed at least a full‑load of resources to make the trip worthwhile, so I’d pack a Large Cargo (or two Small Cargoes) with each raider. That way a single successful hit could fund a new shipyard or a Research Lab upgrade without eating into my own production. As I climbed the ranks, I trimmed the ratio down to about 2:1 and started mixing in a few Espionage Probes and a handful of Recyclers for the occasional debris field—those “support” units turned out to be cheap insurance against losing a combat ship for nothing. Alliance timing became the game‑changer. My alliance would schedule coordinated raids just before a moon’s defense cooldown expired, so we could throw a wave of 5–7 Battlecruisers backed by a convoy of Large Cargoes into the same system. The rule of thumb I live by now is: “Never send more combat power than you have cargo to bring back at least 80 % of the loot,” which keeps the net gain positive even if the fight goes sideways. On the defensive side, we keep a standing fleet of about 30 % combat ships parked at our main planet while the rest stay in orbit as a reserve that can be called in within a few minutes—this quick‑response pool lets us react to sudden attacks without sacrificing our resource‑gathering runs.
