When you break it down, organic pads are the “soft‑touch” option – they’re cheap, quiet and produce a lot of dust, but they’ll wear out in roughly 30‑40 k km on city driving or sooner if you do a lot of stop‑and‑go. Semi‑metallic pads sit in the middle: they handle higher temperatures, give better bite under hard braking, and last about 45‑60 k km, but they’re noisier and can be tougher on rotors. Ceramic pads are the premium choice – low dust, stable performance across a wide temperature range, and you can often stretch the service interval to 70‑80 k km, though they’re the priciest and sometimes feel a bit “spongy” in very aggressive street‑sport scenarios. Think of the trade‑off like choosing between a regular tire and a run‑flat: the cheaper tire gives a comfortable ride and is easy on the budget, but you’ll replace it more often; the run‑flat costs more up‑front and can feel harsher, yet it buys you extra mileage and peace of mind. If you’ve got an OBD‑II‑linked brake‑wear sensor (something I’ve added to a few home‑automation projects), you can actually monitor pad thickness in real time and schedule changes right when they hit the 3 mm mark, regardless of the mileage estimate. In my own sedan, I stick with semi‑metallic pads for everyday use because the extra heat tolerance handles my occasional hill descents, and I swap them out around the 50 k km mark – the sensor alerts me a few thousand kilometers early, so I never get caught with squealing brakes. If you prefer a cleaner garage and don’t mind the extra cost, ceramic is the way to go, especially on a daily driver that sees a lot of light‑braking.
