When you start looking at DDR4 specs, the simple rule of thumb is to compare the true latency in nanoseconds rather than just the CL number. You can calculate it with CL × 2000 ÷ Effective MT/s (so a 3200 MT/s stick with CL 16 gives about 10 ns, while a 3600 MT/s kit at CL 18 is roughly 10 ns as well). In practice that means a higher‑clocked module only wins if its CL isn’t too far off; otherwise the extra bandwidth gets eaten by the longer wait time. In my last build I swapped a 3000 MT/s CL 15 kit for a 3600 MT/s CL 18 set, and the real‑world difference in gaming FPS was almost nil—both hovered around the same 9–10 ns latency. The noticeable boost only showed up in memory‑heavy workloads like large‑scale simulations or video rendering, where the extra bandwidth could actually be utilized. So when you’re balancing the two, prioritize low nanosecond latency for latency‑sensitive tasks (gaming, low‑end CPUs, real‑time strategy titles) and lean toward higher MT/s for bandwidth‑bound applications (content creation, scientific computing, high‑end modded games). In design you’ll usually want a CL that keeps the ns figure under 10 ns if you can; any module that pushes the latency above that will rarely give you a net gain, no matter how fast the clock is.
